Photographs, prints, or artwork on paper require glass to protect them. Matting keeps the image off the glass so moisture doesn't get trapped and ruin it.

Photographs, prints, or artwork on canvas (or hardboard) do not require matting or glass. Larger works look better in a wide frame which gives more strength and is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
